What Educators and Parents are sayingBullies are a Pain in the Brain is a proven remedy for the teachers’ headache. It has been tested, undergone studies and, now, is on the market as a likely cure for an ever-growing epidemic – bullying. How many times have we heard on the news of students committing suicide and homicides as a result of bullying episodes? Well, one Columbine is one too many. Unfortunately, too many young lives have been lost because for, too long this problem has been swept under the rug. Today the lumps of debris can no longer be smoothed out or ignored. The cost of turning our heads in another direction or playing the blame game is too expensive and there are no instant refunds for a life. The video, workbooks and discussions were very effective in my classroom. The students enjoyed discussing characters in class and at home. I think what they learned most was not to remain quiet about someone they are fearful of or who makes negative or threatening statements. They still like watching the video. No one wants to be called a “bully.” Edith Mahone, Principal, Fonwood Elementary, North Forest ISD, Houston, Texas For the past three years Gonzales ISD has utilized the “Trevor Romain” program in grades K-6 with the addition of grades 7 and 8 this year. During that time, we have noticed a significant drop in discipline referrals and an increase in student reading achievement. The “Trevor Romain” program has made a positive and lasting effect on our district. I would recommend this program to every school not only to improve student behavior but also to aide in improving student reading and writing achievement. Ron D. Bragg We are pleased with the increased acquisition of ELA skills that our students have demonstrated. The reading and writing materials about bullies are very engaging and are making a difference in developing positive student behavior. Ms Sarah Sheppard – Principal It has actually helped those who were bullies and now they have become friends with those who were being bullied”. Vernessa Gentry, Principal, Bramlette Elementary “The kids are writing in their journal even before we get to the lesson”. Doris McKelvey, Teacher, Valley View Elementary Overall, the bullying curriculum has had its greatest effect in the area of helping students to recognize the behavior of a bully and feeling comfortable and not afraid of retaliation when reporting incidents of bullying; as well as, knowing that there will be follow through by the adult the incident reported to.” Cynthia Wise, Principal, McClure Elementary The Spanish translations for the workbooks and journals are very helpful for the students. They also like that the illustrations aren’t “babyish”. We have used the vocabulary words in other instances in our school day and the students understand and recognize the words.” Gwen Skinner, Teacher, Hudson, PEP The great thing about the program used to teach these techniques, is that it is being taught through a supplemental English-Language Arts curriculum that enhances students’ skills in this important core content area while tackling one of the most difficult issues adolescents AND THEIR FAMILIES face today. “It is important that our staff, parents and especially our students know that our campuses are safe places where bullying and victimizing will not be tolerated,” says NFISD Superintendent of Schools Dr. Adrain Johnson. “It is not harmless behavior that children will just grow out of. It is toxic, disruptive activity that causes students to do poorly in school and to suffer from low self-esteem.” -Dr. Adrain Johnson, Superintendent, North Forest ISD, Houston, TX “We were very satisfied with the implementation of the program last year,” says NFISD Senior Director of Curriculum & Instruction Rodney Louis. “While remaining aligned with the knowledge and skills that our students must learn, we are able to incorporate important lessons about character, respect and discipline. This also provides our staff, parents and students with a starting point to discuss the critical issue of bullying and to make it clear that it will not be allowed.” Louis adds that the Trevor Romain Company is in the process of writing a version for the secondary level. He hopes to implement the program in the district’s middle schools next year. THEY ALSO ARE COMMITTED TO USING THE PRE-KINDERGARTEN PROGRAMS BECAUSE THE ADMINISTRATION, FACULTY AND STAFF ARE COMMITTED TO SAFE PASSAGE FOR CHILDREN OF ALL AGES. -Rodney Louis, Sr. Director, Curriculum & Instruction, North Forest ISD, Houston, TX “I LOVE YOUR PRODUCTS! I use them regularly in my classroom presentations. Kids BEG to hear and see more! This is such an effective and engaging medium to promote positive attitudes and social and emotional learning.” Sherry Frachey, Teacher, Iles Elementary, Springfield, IL “A fine vehicle to promote in-class student discussions about cliques and the nature of true friendship.” Teresa Wittmann, Westgate Elementary, Edmonds, WA “I caught some of my students walking down the hall humming the tune to one of Trevor’s songs. When I am looking for resources that I know will hit home with the kids, I always reach for Trevor Romain’s CD or DVDs.” Jen McClure, School Counselor, Prairie Point Elementary, Kansas City, MO “We received the homework video and my granddaughter is loving it, as are her friends. She also has the one on fear. These are such good videos with great messages that are fun for the kids to watch.” Jo Reimer, grandmother, Oregon “Your video was featured as VIDEO OF THE WEEK for School Library Journal so we purchased Bullies Are A Pain In The Brain. Since that time over 400 kids have viewed the video. On a scale of 1-5, your DVD always receives a 4 or 5 on the information content. Here’s an evaluation: Wow- the 6th graders really loved it.” Dottie Blackwell, video library manager, Idaho “I just love Trevor Romain’s books, videos, etc. More importantly, the kids LOVE them.” Gina Candeleria, M.Ed., M.C., licensed professional counselor, Arizona “The kids love it, teachers value it, counselors applaud it, and parents want it.” Jan McKimmey, Counselor, Texas “I am a teacher at an elementary school in Colorado. I thought you might enjoy a comment I heard recently in my class. As I was preparing to show Cliques, Phonies and Other Baloney and I said to the class, Enjoy the movie’, one of my students (Brianna, age 10) said, ‘It’s impossible not to enjoy a Trevor Romain movie!’.” Larry Epstein, Ph.D., Arrowhead Elementary, Colorado “I must say Trevor had an impact on our students like no other author or speaker has ever had.” St. Marks Elementary School, Austin, TX “Please create more videos/stories featuring Jack and Skye with Activity Books. My 3rd-5th Grade students love them.” Rita Ard, Counselor, East Elementary, Taft ISD “Not only did my students love the videos, but they also learned valuable life lessons from these characters. The lessons that are provided with the videos are great for engaging the students in the topic.” Mindy Turner, Counselor, Arizona “… The children laughed so much, I couldn’t help thinking about how important that is for their souls. At the same time, it was obvious as Trevor wrapped up each point that the students understood the lessons he was imparting clearly. Each point Trevor made was right in line with what we have taught in years past, and hearing a grown-up’s anecdotes and memories related to these important life-lessons was the best way to make sure the learning was solid.” Lisa Zapalac, Head of Lower School, Trinity Episcopal School, Austin, TX “Trevor writes and animates really amazing children’s books to help kids out with the stuff that they deal with each day. Trevor has a gift of presenting these topics from a kid’s perspective using animation, conversation and humor. What I have seen “live” is that Trevor has an amazing gift of connection with children, he is an incredibly talented artist and he has a huge heart that every day he devotes making a child’s world work. …I think you will find Trevor to be honest, inspiring and true.” Shannon Mehner “Trevor Romain changes people’s lives through his writing.” Debi Sharp, Executive Director, Candelighters Childhood Cancer Foundation “Every community needs a Trevor Romain.” Michael McDonald, Senior Sergeant, Houston Police Department “When my six year old Renee was dying, Trevor sat at the bedside day and night. He promised her he would stay and he did not leave the room until she died. And still he stayed. Trevor is an angel with the cancer children in Austin. He did the same thing with Megan and Victor and Dana and Vicky.” Marcy Dauphin, Austin, Texas What Kids are SayingThe Trevor Romain Bullying Program has been an essential part of student life at Gonzales Jr High. It has helped raise awareness about the effects of bullying and has also helped encourage our students to speak out and take a stand against bullying. Prior to the Trevor Romain Program, most students were not fully educated on what bullying really means and what it looks like. Now, our students have a way to protect themselves and advocate for others who are being “bullied”. Brittany Barnett 8th Grade English Teacher – Gonzales Jr High Gonzales, Texas When I was first informed that we had to implement the bullying curriculum I felt that this was an added assignment that I did not need. But since I have been using the bullying curriculum our students have been faced with different situations that a child should not have to face. This program has been an outlet for my students. They are more open when we have discussions and learning how to handle situations when they occur. The bullying curriculum has also been a tool that I am able to use to address other areas that I can tie into the curriculum. I thank my district for having the insight for this program because it is a tool that has made a difference in my classes. Shirley Archie 5th grade teacher – Royal Elementary, Royal ISD Pattison, Texas My name is Katrina Kennedy, and I’m a 6th grade Reading and Language Arts teacher at Royal Jr. High. I’m a first year teacher and was ecstatic to see that our school district incorporated a bullying curriculum. I think the curriculum “Bullies Are a Pain in The Brain” displays great techniques for handling bullies in different situations and recommend it for use in other districts that are in need of a Bullying curriculum. Katrina Kennedy 6th Grade Teacher – Royal Jr. High, Royal ISD Pattison, Texas “I love your movies. I am a member of the forth grade. The reason I’m e-mailing you is because I think you a great idol for a kids to look up for and that’s why your mine. I wish you luck to stardom and if you need any kid tips I got your back on that one and if you need a good story I’m here for ya too.” Maddie, 4th Grader, sends Trevor an email “I used to hate reading until Mr. Romain came to my school. Now I read as much as I can. He is the funniest person I have ever met.” Whei Chiu, PS 110, New York City, NY “Trevor Romain is really a funny man. I mean you don’t know how funny he is. You should have seen all the smiling faces. You should have heard all the laughing kids and teachers.” Kelly O’Brien, 4th grade, Sacred Heart School, Hollister, California “Trevor Romain is the most special person I have ever met. He came to our school and made us laugh and made us cry. He made us realize we can make a difference in people’s lives. God blessed the world when he made Mr. Romain.” Jaqueline Espey, The Benjamin School, North Palm Beach, Florida “Can Mr. Romain please, please come back to our class? I’ll beg on my knees if I have to because we want to learn more about him. P.S. Pleeease!” Alex Campos, Harris Elementary School, Victoria, Texas “Mr. Trevor Romain, you really inspired me. I go to a kidney clinic in Austin because I have a kidney problem that can’t be cured. I hate going to the hospital because I see little kids with worse diseases than mine. After hearing you speak I feel like I need to go to the hospital and help make those kid’s lives better.” Nicole, Canyon Middle School, New Braunfels, Texas “Trevor, you make it a lot easier for me to come to the hospital for chemotherapy. You make me laugh real hard and you help me to see the positive side of life. If it wasn’t for you I don’t think I could handle being here at the hospital. How did you get so funny? Thanks for your friendship and thanks for always being here for me.” Vicki Newkirk (1982 – 1995), Fredricksburg, Texas “Trevor Romain is the funniest person I have ever met in my life. Except for my mom’s boyfriend.” Dumi Molotsane, Linksfield School, Johannesburg, South Africa “I am so happy that someone in the world is not greedy and cares about children like Trevor Romain does.” Norma Espinoza, 4th Grade, Austin, Texas “Trevor is the funniest guy in the world. I have never laughed so much in my whole life except for when my mom drove the car through the garage wall.” Michael Tonnery, Bow Elementary, Bow, New Hampshire “Trevor, you are cool. Thanks for being on TV with me and thanks for hanging out with us at the hospital even though we puke all the time. Nobody else sees the funny side of being here except you. I wish you would realize how your visits make us feel so great.” Dana Barkley (1981 -1996), Austin, Texas |
